PV Sindhu hoping to carry Singapore Open momentum for the rest of the year as she gears up for Commonwealth Games

Indian ace PV Sindhu once again made the country proud as she won the SIngapore Masters title by beating China’s Wang Zhi Yi in the finals as she clinched her first SDuper 500 title this year. The two time Olympic medallist claims this to be a very special win as it was a long time coming.

The star shuttler won the match 21-9, 11-21, 21-15 to clinch the title, which was her third one for this year. But honestly this was the biggest of the other two and hence the ecstasy was on a different level. It was also SIndhu’s first title in Singapore so it was bound to be special for her.

After winning the match the 27-year-old shared, “This is my first title as a 27-year-old so I can say this is a special one. Playing in Singapore after a long time too, this win means a lot.”

The Indian shuttler was coming close but it was just not enough for her as she lost two quarterfinals in the Malaysia Masters and the Malaysian Open. She shared how the matches were close and ending up on the wrong side did bother her a lot. But now she feels that Singapore will open more avenues for her and more titles will come in the coming months.

“They were hard-fought battles so it was a bit upsetting but each match mattered. And finally, I could get this win, cross that barrier. I hope this trend continues for the rest of the year,” Sindhu revealed when quizzed about her defeats in Malaysia.

Sindhu’s next job at hand is the upcoming Commonwealth Games but before that the 27-year-old wants to relax and take a day off and spend time with family. She shared how it has been tough for her to play in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and now that she needs to be at Birmingham in a few days takes a massive toll on her body. But hopefully the rest and recuperation with family will energize her more to strive forward.

“I just have a week after that again we leave for the Commonwealth Games. Maybe I can take a day off, and spend time with my family,” she said. “It has been a long tour for me, there was Indonesia, Malaysia for two weeks, and now Singapore. So it is time to go back home and just relax for a bit and then get back to training.”

PV SIndhu has won a silver and bronze medal in individual events at the Commonwealth Games. Her only gold medal came in a team event. So this time she will be looking to win gold in Women’s singles and fill out that blank in her cabinet. She is the favourite to win the gold medal and the 27-year-old will be looking to play with that authority in Birmingham.
