Batting legend Brian Lara staunchly defended Virat Kohli against critics alleging the Indian cricketer’s selfishness during the 2023 World Cup. He condemned these claims as rooted in jealousy towards Kohli’s extraordinary achievements in cricket.
Kohli’s exceptional performance in the 2023 World Cup, smashing a record-breaking 765 runs in 11 innings at an average of 95.62, marked a historic milestone. His feat surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record, becoming the first player to amass over 700 runs in a single World Cup edition.
Disregarding the critics’ accusations, Lara emphasized, “Those [who] are saying all these are jealous of him. They are envious of the amount of runs he has scored. I have faced this too in my career.”
Lara praised Kohli’s dedication and discipline, acknowledging his remarkable achievements in the World Cup, including three centuries. Kohli’s unbeaten 103 against Bangladesh, his 101* against South Africa on his 35th birthday, and his 50th one-day hundred in the semi-final against New Zealand highlighted his exceptional form.
Expressing admiration for Kohli’s commitment, Lara commented, “Only Kohli can come close. I’m a big fan of his discipline and dedication. The way he prepares for a match by giving it his all… how can you not be his fan.”
Despite Kohli’s prolific numbers, Lara expressed uncertainty about Kohli surpassing Tendulkar’s record of 100 international hundreds. However, he expressed his support and admiration for Kohli’s potential to achieve this milestone.
Currently boasting 26,532 runs in international cricket from 518 matches at an impressive average of 54.36, Kohli’s outstanding contributions continue to mark him as a formidable force in the cricketing world.
