India’s veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami said he is trying his best to be available for selection in the England Test series. Shami is currently recovering from an ankle injury, which also ruled him out of the South Africa tour.
India missed Shami’s services in the opening Test match against the Proteas as other pacers failed to support Jasprit Bumrah. Shami ended the ODI World Cup as the highest wicket-taker with 24 scalps in seven matches and he bowled with an impressive average of 10.71, including three five-wicket hauls and one four-wicket haul.
The fast bowler from West Bengal also bagged seven wickets in the all-important semifinal against New Zealand. After his consistent performances, Shami was also awarded the Arjuna Award by honorable President Droupadi Murmu.
“I am trying my best to be available for the selection for England Test series but test match is longer format so you don’t want to be in doubt,” Shami said while talking to India Today.
Shami also spoke about possibly playing in the T20 World Cup 2024 and said he will be available if the team’s think tank wants his services.
“Whenever it comes to T20s, many times I don’t understand that whether I am in the scene or not,” he said. “But what I feel is that you have IPL before the T20 World Cup and that is the best opportunity to bring in momentum, and if management asks me to play, I’ll be available.”
Shami said receiving the Arjuna Award is the biggest achievement of his life.
“Its the biggest achievement of my life I can’t express my feelings. I love my sport and I always try to do best whatever I am doing,” Shami said. “The kind of support my family gave to me to pursue my dream is just amazing. I don’t have words to explain that how I started my journey from Amroha to Indian cricket. Passion is always there and I always try to play as much as I can and do well for the country.”
The first Test match between India and England will played in Hyderabad from 25th January and Shami will hope to recover for the crucial Test series.
