IND vs SA 2022: How they perform for India will matter – Suresh Raina on Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh

Former Indian batter Suresh Raina believes it will be crucial for youngsters like Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh to hit the ground running for India in the upcoming series against South Africa. Both of these youngsters had impressed in the recently concluded Tata IPL 2022 while playing for their respective teams.

Malik scalped 22 wickets in 14 matches for SunRisers Hyderabad at an average of 20.18 and an economy rate of 9.01. The gun fast bowler bowled in excess of 145 km/h consistently for the Orange Army.

On the other hand, Arshdeep Singh scalped 10 wickets in 14 matches for Punjab Kings and bowled at an impressive economy rate of 7.70.

Furthermore, Raina feels it will be interesting to note how KL Rahul will lead his troops. Rahul led Lucknow Super Giants to playoffs stages but they lost to RCB in the Eliminator contest.

Raina playing in the IPL is different from playing for the national team and it will be crucial for the youngsters to grab their opportunities.

Suresh Raina said on Star Sports Game Plan, “It is extremely important because you will get to see all the players who performed in the IPL. But how they perform for India will matter. The mindset is important if you have to play for India.”

“When the matches happen, it will be extremely hot, the matches will be played in June. There are a lot of things to look for. Umran Malik, who is a talented bowler, Arshdeep, the way he has bowled, and KL Rahul as a captain. He has impressed a lot but it is now the turn of the Indian team, I feel he will do very well.”

On the other hand, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan reckons India should finalize their T20 World Cup till the Asia Cup after the series against South Africa, Ireland, and England.

“The selectors and team management’s sights will be on the World Cup. How many matches are you going to get? These five matches, you will play some matches in Ireland and England and after that, according to me, this audition has to be ended and you have to make your squad almost ready by the time you play the Asia Cup.”

Pathan added that the upcoming T20I series against South Africa will be crucial for the youngsters, who will be looking to make a mark for their World Cup selection.

“You want to keep one or two players in your extras but no audition after that. But this South African series is a huge audition and along with that a fantastic opportunity for the youngsters.”

The first T20I between India and South Africa will be played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Thursday.
