IPL 2023: Cameron Green’s all-round brilliance powers Mumbai Indians to third straight win

In a thrilling encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, the Mumbai Indians secured their third consecutive win in the TATA IPL 2023 tournament, defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 14 runs in Match 25.

The highlight of the match was Cameron Green’s impressive innings of 64 runs off 40 deliveries, including his maiden IPL fifty, which helped MI post a competitive total of 192/5. Ishan Kishan (38 off 31) and Tilak Varma (37 off 17) also made significant contributions with the bat. Jason Behrendorff, with his two early wickets, set the tone for MI, while the collective effort of the bowlers eventually saw them bowl SRH out for 178.

Chasing a target of 193, SRH’s Harry Brook was dismissed early by Behrendorff in the second over. Brook had already hit a couple of fours, but Behrendorff’s delivery was too good for him to handle. The Australian pacer struck again in his next over, removing Rahul Tripathi, reducing SRH to 25/2.

MI’s disciplined bowling ensured that SRH were restricted to 42/2 in the first six overs, with just four boundaries and a six conceded in the Powerplay. Mayank Agarwal and Aiden Markram tried to accelerate the innings with a couple of fours and a six, but Green had other plans, dismissing Markram (22 off 17) at deep mid-wicket. Piyush Chawla soon followed suit, sending Abhishek Sharma back to the dugout with a googly.

SRH was 76/4 at the end of the 10th over. Agarwal and Heinrich Klassen then took charge, hitting a boundary every over. Klaasen hit Chawla for three consecutive sixes and a four in the 12th over. However, Chawla had the last laugh, dismissing him for 36 runs off 16 deliveries. With 66 runs required off 36 deliveries, SRH sent in Abdul Samad at No.7.

Meredith’s excellent over resulted in the dismissal of Agarwal (48 off 41) and conceded just six runs. Jansen hit two fours off Green’s next over, and a four off Meredith’s, making it ten runs off the over. However, Meredith got the breakthrough, dismissing Jansen on the next delivery.

With 43 runs needed off 18 deliveries, Washington Sundar hit a couple of fours off Behrendorff, who then conceded five wides. However, Tim David’s quick thinking resulted in Washington being run out, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar hit the final ball of the over for a four, reducing the total to 19 runs off six deliveries.

With 24 runs required off 12 deliveries, Green bowled a brilliant over, conceding just four runs, leaving SRH with a tough ask of scoring 20 runs in the final over. Rohit Sharma handed the ball to Arjun Tendulkar to bowl the last over, and the youngster held his nerve, conceding just five runs and picking up his maiden IPL wicket, that of Bhuvneshwar. SRH was eventually bowled out for 178 runs.

Brief Scores:

Mumbai Indians 192/5 in 20 overs( Green-64*; Kishan-38; Jansen-2/43) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 178 in 19.5 overs( Agarwal-48; Klaasen-36; Meredith-2/43) by 14 runs.
