Former Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Tom Moody has shed light on the team’s selection dilemma. Moody feels SRH has a lot of cooks in the kitchen and the team’s captain Aiden Markram has a limited say in the team’s selection.
At the toss for SRH vs RCB, Markram was asked about Umran Malik’s exclusion from the playing XI and the South African admitted he doesn’t have a lot of clue of what is happening behind the scenes. Markram said Malik has the X-factor in his bowling as he can consistently bowl at more than 145 clicks but he wasn’t sure why he has been dropped.
In fact, Malik has scalped only five wickets in the seven matches of IPL 2023 for the Orange Army.
“I am not too sure, to be honest with you. Obviously, he is a player with the X factor, and bowls at 150kmph, but I can’t, I don’t really know what is happening with him behind the scenes. But, certainly, he is a player that has a lot of x-factors,” Markram said at the coin toss.
Commenting on the same, Tom Moody said on ESPNcricinfo, “I think that implies that he has very little say in the selection and he may have an opinion on Umran Malik the cricketer and what he probably feels his season should have been like, with regards to opportunities to play.”
The former Australian all-rounder reckons Malik was unfairly dropped from the team’s final XI and the team’s captain and coach need to be on the same page.
“That’s not ideal, you need your captain and your coach on the same page, working towards what you think is the best combination. Every franchise is different with regards to the involvement in the selection,” the 53-year-old explained.
In fact, this is not the first time when SRH’s team management and the owners have come under the scanner. SRH had decided to drop their former captain David Warner in IPL 2021 and they were criticized by many cricket boffins for not treating the Australian left-hander with respect.
The Orange Army will play their last league stage match against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Sunday.
