Gujarat Titans have suffered a huge blow as their gun fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League 2024 due to an ankle injury, as reported by PTI. Shami suffered the injury in the ODI World Cup 2023 and has been out of action since then.
A BCCI source has revealed that Shami will undergo surgery in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, Shami was right on the money throughout the ODI World Cup and bowled brilliantly with his seam-up position, which has always been his strength.
Shami ended the tournament as the highest wicket-taker with 24 scalps in seven matches and he bowled with an impressive average of 10.71, including three five-wicket hauls and one four-wicket haul.
The fast bowler from West Bengal also bagged seven wickets in the all-important semifinal against New Zealand.
“Shami was in London in the last week of January to take special ankle injections and he was told that after three weeks, he could start light running and take it from thereon.
“But the injection hasn’t worked and now the only option left is surgery. He will shortly leave for the UK for surgery. IPL seems out of the question,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
This setback has also put Shami’s participation in the T20 World Cup in doubt.
Meanwhile, Shami ended IPL 2023 as the Purple Cap winner as he bagged 28 wickets in 17 matches and played a key role in taking Gujarat Titans to the final of the tournament.
Gujarat Titans will begin their IPL 2024 campaign against five-time champions Mumbai Indians at Ahmedabad on March 24. Shubman Gill will lead the franchise in the upcoming season.
