Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has overtaken Rahul Dravid’s tally in ODIs to become the country’s fourth-highest run-scorer. Dravid amassed 10768 runs in 340 ODIs for India at an average of 39.16, including 12 centuries. Overall, Dravid scored 10889 runs in 344 ODIs.
Rohit, who scored 64 runs off just 44 balls in the second ODI against Sri Lanka, now has 10,831 runs in 264 ODI matches at an impressive average of 49.23, including 31 centuries and three double centuries in the 50-overs format. Sachin Tendulkar (18426), Virat Kohli (13886), and Sourav Ganguly (11221) are the top three run-getters for India in ODIs.
Rohit needed only two runs to leapfrog Dravid’s record before the second ODI against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Sunday. The Indian skipper raced a 29-ball fifty and added 97 runs off just 81 balls with Shubman Gill for the opening partnership while chasing 241.
But Rohit’s efforts went in vain as India suffered a shocking 32-run loss after the middle-order failed to deliver. With this win, Sri Lanka has taken an impregnable lead of 1-0 in the three-match series after the first ODI ended in a tie.
Furthermore, Rohit also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 120 fifty-plus scores for India as the opener in international cricket. Rohit has now scored 50+ scores on 121 occasions across all formats. Former Australian opener David Warner, who recently announced his retirement, has the most 50+ points as an opener (146).
Warner is followed by West Indies legend Chris Gayle (144), Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya (136), West Indies’ Desmond Haynes (131), and former South African captain Graeme Smith (125).
The third ODI between India and Sri Lanka will be played at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Wednesday.
