India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir was delighted after they clinched the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka by 3-0 with a Super Over win in the final game at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka was in a shoo-in position as they needed 30 runs in the last five overs with nine wickets in hand. However, Indian bowlers were able to turn the tables as they scalped seven wickets while conceding only 29 runs to take the game into the Super Over.
The hosts needed nine runs in the last two overs but Rinku Singh conceded only three runs in the penultimate over and also bagged two wickets. Suryakumar Yadav then took the onus on his shoulders and conceded only five runs in the last over.
Subsequently, Washington Sundar conceded only two runs in the Super Over and also accounted for Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka. Gambhir was pleased with the fighting attitude of the team to pull out a win out of the jaws of defeat.
“Outstanding captaincy and more important as well because I asked for something before the start of the game and you actually delivered it. This is what happens when you keep fighting. You don’t give up,” Gautam Gambhir said in the video uploaded by BCCI.
“Make sure when you come back for the Bangladesh Series, you can take a break. You absolutely deserve it. But more importantly, keep your skills and especially your fitness levels high,” he added, stressing he importance of maintaining fitness and readiness for future challenges.
Meanwhile, Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya also showered praise on Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Ravi Bishnoi and Suryakumar Yadav while addressing the team.
India was able to come up with a collective effort and they will look to keep up the good show in the upcoming ODI series, which will begin in Colombo on Friday.
