Indian captain Rohit Sharma showered praise on his gun fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah after they registered a thrilling six-run win against chief-rivals Pakistan at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York on Sunday. Bumrah returned with match-winning figures of 3-14 as India successfully defended the joint-lowest target in T20 World Cup history.
The Men in Blue also registered their seventh T20 World Cup win against Pakistan. Bumrah accounted for Pakistan captain Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Iftikhar Ahmed in his fine spell. Moreover, the ace pacer bowled as many as 15 dot balls in his four overs quota.
The Indian pack leader had Babar Azam caught at slip, bowled Mohammad Rizwan, and dismissed Iftikhar Ahmed with a low full toss.
Rohit Sharma said in the post-match presentation, “He’s going from strength to strength (Bumrah). We all know what he can do. Not going to talk too much about him. Want him to be in that mindset throughout the WC. He’s a genius, we all know that.”
The Indian skipper admitted they didn’t bat well as they were 89-3 at one stage but lost the remaining seven wickets for 30 runs to be bundled out for 119. Rohit was pleased with the collective bowling effort of his team.
Rohit added, “We didn’t bat well enough. Halfway through our innings we were in good position. We didn’t put enough partnership there and fell short with the bat. We spoke about every run matters on a pitch like that. There was enough in the pitch. Was a good wicket to be honest, compared to the last game. With a bowling lineup like that you feel confident to do the job. Halfway through the stage when they were batting, we got everyone together and said that if it can happen to us, it can happen to them. Little contribution from everyone can make a huge difference.”
India will next take on the USA at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York on Wednesday.
