Sources familiar with the matter have confirmed to Sportskeeda that multiple Indian Super League (ISL) teams are vying for the signature of center-back Melroy Melwin Assisi from Rajasthan United FC ahead of the upcoming season.
As of now, NorthEast United FC and newly-promoted Punjab FC are the leading contenders in the pursuit of Assisi. However, sources reveal that negotiations with both clubs have not yet reached the final stages.
Additionally, a third club, East Bengal FC, has expressed interest in securing the services of the 24-year-old defender. Odisha FC and Assisi’s former club, Chennaiyin FC, have also held preliminary discussions with the player, but no concrete agreements have been reached at this point.
Assisi had signed a three-year contract with Rajasthan United last summer, which is set to expire in 2025. Therefore, any club seeking to lure him away from the Desert Warriors will have to pay a transfer fee.
Assisi’s journey to prominence was not instantaneous but rather characterized by perseverance and hard work. Hailing from Vasai-Virar, a municipality on the outskirts of Mumbai, he faced limited opportunities to pursue his passion for football. However, he managed to break into the youth setup of the now-defunct Mumbai FC, marking a significant milestone in his professional career.
After Mumbai FC disbanded in 2015, Assisi continued his footballing journey by playing for Union Bank of India. He subsequently had stints with various teams, including RF Young Champs, Chennaiyin FC’s youth team, and ARA FC. Throughout these experiences, Assisi honed his skills and demonstrated an unwavering work ethic, making the most of every minute he spent on the pitch.
It was at Rajasthan United where Assisi truly blossomed, becoming a standout player and attracting the attention of several ISL teams.
Given his background and diligent approach, it is not far-fetched to believe that Assisi will eventually establish himself in the top-tier league of the country. The question remains: Which club will he ultimately choose? Only time will reveal his destination.
