Odisha FC talismanic striker Diego Mauricio has signed a two-year contract extension with the team, the club announced on their social media handles on Monday. The Brazilian impressed in the recently concluded ISL 2022-23 season as he scored 12 goals in the season and thus played an instrumental role in taking the Juggernauts to the playoff stages for the first time in the competition.
The forward also earned the Golden boot for scoring a dozen goals in 21 matches and became the first player from Odisha FC to clinch the award in the history of the tournament. Furthermore, he provided four assists for the Kalinga Warriors.
Mauricio expressed his delight at extending his contract with Odisha FC.
“I belong to Odisha. I love the people and the city. The fans have shown me how much they love me. My family is very happy that I decided to say. I have had a great time here, and I am looking forward to continuing my journey with the club. I believe we can achieve great things together,” the striker told the club’s official website.
Meanwhile, the forward represented Odisha FC back in the 2020-21 season and played 20 matches for the club.
Mauricio had impressed as he had netted 12 goals and had also provided two assists during his first stint. Subsequently, the Brazilian joined hands with Mumbai City earlier in January 2022 and scored three goals for the team before once again moving back to Odisha FC.
Odisha FC had finished in sixth place in the standings after nine wins in 20 matches of the league stage in the 2022-23 season. However, their journey was ended by eventual champions ATK Mohun Bagan as they suffered a 2-0 loss in the knockout game.
Odisha FC will begin its Super Cup campaign against East Bengal FC on Sunday.
