Kasper Schmeichel hoping to outdo his father’s achievements

Kasper Schmeichel has been living upto the legacy of his father’s incredible achievement in club football over the last few years.

This year, he played a key role in the final of the FA Cup to deny recently crowned European Champions Chelsea from lifting the trophy, thus winning the final for his side. He also played an instrumental role in Leicester City’s fairytale Premier League title-winning run in 2016!

Schmeichel now has his sights set on the upcoming European Championship where he will be in goal for Denmark. They will be up against tough opponents in Belgium, Russia, and Finland in Group B and Schmeichel has big ambitions for his country.

“I want to achieve success with Denmark. I want to win the European Championship with Denmark,” Kasper Schmeichel said. “I want to try something wild with Denmark, I want to go to the World Cup and play as long as I possibly can.”

Kasper Schmeichel’s father Peter Schmeichel had also marked a successful legacy in the sport. He had won three FA Cups, three Premier League titles and a Champions League with Manchester United. However, probably his most unique achievement was when he helped Denmark win the European Championship in 1992.

Peter Schmeichel kept 38 clean sheets in 103 appearances for his country. His son Kasper has 32 clean sheets in 63 matches for Denmark.

The younger Schmeichel has been in brilliant form recently. 12 of his 32 clean sheets have arrived over the last 16 international appearances. His incredible form with both the national side and Leicester City saw him winning the Danish Player of the Year award for the second straight season.

“For me, it’s not about having a good year, it’s about the continuity and stability that my position requires,” Kasper Schmeichel said. “A goalkeeper has to be stable and have a high base level.

“I feel that I have had that for many, many years now, and I also think that the teams I play for appreciate that they know where they have me and what they can expect from me.”

Denmark also have plenty of firepower in other areas of the park. They have Chelsea’s Andrea Christensen in defense, Inter Milan’s Christian Eriksen in midfield and Barcelona’s Martin Braithwaite up front. They could prove to be the dark horses in Euro 2020.
