NorthEast United goalkeeper Mirshad Michu wants to forget last season as he looks to aim for the Championship

It was a very tough season for NorthEast United last time out in the Indian Super League as the Highlanders finished tenth. But goalkeeper Mirshad Michu is very confident that this upcoming season they will have a major turnaround as he believes that the entire team will get together and put up a much better performance in the upcoming season.

The Highlanders reached the playoffs under Khalid Jamil in the 2020-21 season but in their hope to replicate that performance they failed miserably. There were several injury problems and major dip in form for some players. Among all of this Michu was one of the better performers as he managed to start in goal ahead of the experienced Subhashish Roy Chowdhury.

The custodian now wants to put all the disappointment at the back of his head and wants to focus on the job at hand. He wants a fresh start to the new season and is aiming at nothing less than the ISL trophy. “Our aim this season is to win the Championship. We are working very hard for that. Last season, due to injury problems we had a bad season. But this time we are quite sure regarding our success,” the 28-year-old shared in an interaction with Sportskeeda.

Mirshad Michu was relatively inexperienced at the ISL level but when Khalid Jamil decided to opt for him following SUbhasish Roy Chowdhury’s poor form and injury concerns, Michu stood up to the task. However he credits Jamil for trusting in his ability and giving him confidence that he needed to flourish at this level. “Khalid sir helped me a lot. He provided me the chance to prove myself. Also, he motivated me a lot to give out my best on the field,” Michu said.

The custodian also shared how Subhasish Roy Chowdhury being a senior helped him a lot and rectified his mistakes in training and cheered for him when he delivered a great performance. “Dada (Roy Choudhary) guided me a lot. He helped me to rectify my mistakes on the pitch. Also, he applauded me when I used to play well for my team. I am very much grateful to the team management for giving me a chance to play alongside him,” Michu added.

Overall Michu will be looking to replicate his form from last season and hope that the new coach brings out the best from the players that he will have at his disposal. It promises to be a very difficult season for the Highlanders considering the signings made by some of them. But it will be interesting to follow them as the season progresses.
