Former Manchester United player Danny Simpson has announced his retirement from professional football. While reflecting on his career, the 37-year-old admitted that playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney was beyond his wildest dreams.
Simpson played for English Premier League clubs like Newcastle United, Leicester City, and Manchester United. The right-back shared the dressing with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney at the Old Trafford-based club.
“It’s the day every footballer knows will come around eventually and the one nobody wants to happen but it’s time to announce my retirement from the game we all love so much,” Simpson wrote in a lengthy statement, as quoted by Daily Mail.
“Whilst it’s a day I never wanted to come and it’s been a while since I played I know it’s time to hang up my boots and concentrate on other projects…”
Simpson said he shares great memories of playing for the Red Devils and it meant a lot to him and his family.
“Being picked up by Manchester United was a dream come true for me. My local team, the club everyone in Salford loves, it meant everything to me and my family. The hair still picks up on the back of my neck when I think about my Old Trafford debut. Playing alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney – it was beyond my wildest dreams.”
Meanwhile, Simpson also won the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016 when the club stunned one and all with their performances. Furthermore, he won the title with Manchester United in 2008. He played a total of 213 matches in the league.
