The Football Association has confirmed that Gareth Southgate will stay on as England’s manager till Euro 2024. England was knocked out of the FIFA World Cup 2022 after a 2-1 loss against reigning champions France, which had cast a shadow of doubt on Southgate’s future.
However, there is no denying the fact that England has flourished under the tutelage of Southgate in recent years. The Three Lions made it to the semifinal of the 2018 World Cup but lost to Croatia by 2-1.
Southgate’s team then made it to the finals of Euros 2020 but could not cross the final hurdle against Italy in the penalty shootouts. England was one of the favorites at the 2022 World Cup but their journey came to an end against Les Bleus.
Southgate still had two more years left on his contract but he was pondering over his future after the disappointing exit from the World Cup. After some discussions with his family and FA, it was reported that the 52-year-old wanted to continue with his role in charge.
“We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate is continuing as England manager, and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign,” FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said.
“Gareth and Steve Holland have always had our full support, and our planning for the Euros starts now.”
There is no doubt England has been a force to reckon with in the last few years on the world stage and a lot of credit goes to Southgate. He has been in charge for six years and the team has performed consistently under him.
Southgate was given the coaching reins after Euro 2016 and he has been able to turn the tables for the team as they have performed consistently at the big events.
