The list of athletes withdrawing their names from Tokyo 2020 Olympics got another entry as England’s Tennis player Daniel Evans has withdrawn his name from the Olympics, as the Brit has been tested positive for COVID.
The report has come only a day after his fellow British player Johanna Konta also announced that she will not participate in Tokyo 2020 as she is still recovering from coronavirus. Though Japan has ensured maximum safety protocols to be followed throughout the games, many athletes are still reluctant to participate.
Britain’s Daniel Evans has released the statement that he will not be part of Britain’s team in the Olympics as he is tested positive for the coronavirus.
“Hi Guys, unfortunately I recently tested positive for Covid-19. I will not be able to prepare and get myself ready for the Olympics games in Tokyo”, wrote Dan Evans in the statement on his Instagram story.
The Englishman shared his disappointment in not being able to join his fellow countrymen in the Olympics.
“I am hugely disappointed and currently self-isolating according to the guidelines as set by the Government. I want to wish the entire GB team all the very best for the games and look forward to being back on court in the near future”, further quotes Evans in the statement.
The Brit is among the many tennis players who will not be participating in the Tokyo olympics. Around two dozen players have withdrawn, including heavyweights like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem, David Goffin, and Stan Wawrinka.
Not only in the Gentlemen’s category, many players from the ladies category have also withdrawn themselves from the games, including Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, Bianca Andreescu, Sofia Kenin and Serena Williams.
While some are ill or injured, or have given reasons for recovery after hectic schedules of ATP tours as well as Grand slams in recent months, others have cited concerns around pandemic restrictions, which include team member limits and no spectators.
