I will only play if I can fight for the title – Novak Djokovic on Wimbledon participation

Novak Djokovic has claimed that he will only play in the upcoming Wimbledon if he can fight for the title. Djokovic recently made it to the quarterfinals of Roland Garros but he was forced to opt out because of an injury (meniscus tear) before his match against Casper Ruud.

The Serbian underwent a surgery in Paris and has reached England for Wimbledon. However, he is yet to confirm his participation for the championships.

“I didn’t come here to play a few rounds. If I know I can play close to my maximum or at maximum, then I’ll play, if not then I’ll give somebody else a chance to play.

“I really will only play if I know I am in a state which is good enough to go far in the tournament and fight for the title, so that’s the condition.”

“Rehab is going in the right direction every single day,” revealed Djokovic. “A few percent better and better. That’s what’s giving me hope and encouragement to keep going. I’m taking things gradually. I’m not pushing myself yet 100% but I’m hoping that’s going to come in the next few days.”

Djokovic will want to hit the ground running in the upcoming tournament. The Serbian has all the experience under his belt and will want to be at his best in the championships.

Meanwhile, Djokovic had reached the Wimbledon final in 2023 but could not cross the line against Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller. However, the former World No.1 is yet to win a single title in the ongoing season.
