World No.1 Jannik Sinner has opted out of the Paris Masters after feeling unwell. The Italian revealed that he has come down with a virus and won’t be able to take part in the last ATP 1000 event of the tour.
Sinner said he will look to make a stronger comeback in the ATP Finals in Turin. The World No.1 has been in terrific form and recently won the Shanghai Masters. Earlier in the season, the youngster won the Australian Open as well as the US Open.
“This is not an easy announcement to make,” Sinner said on social media. “My team and I arrived early to prepare as best as possible, but unfortunately, I started feeling unwell during training and saw the doctor on Sunday. It turns out I’ve come down with a virus.
“I’m feeling better now, but I’m still not ready to compete here in Paris. I was really looking forward to this tournament, so it’s disappointing, to say the least. For now, I’m focusing on recovery and getting back to 100%. I’ll be aiming to come back stronger for Turin!”
Sinner has now been replaced by lucky loser Arthur Cazaux in the second round. The ATP Finals will begin on Sunday 10th November.
On the other hand, Carlos Alcaraz won his second-round match against Nicolas Jarry by 7-5, 6-1.
“I think I played really good tennis [in the first set], but at the end it was complicated,” said Alcaraz, who improved to 16-4 at ATP Masters 1000 events this season. “I’m just really happy to get through the opening set, it was really important for me to come into the second with more confidence. I [need] time to get used to the speed of the court.
“It’s been two years since I have won a match here in Paris-Bercy, so everytime that I keep going is a gift for me.”
Alcaraz will next face Humbert or Giron.
