American Tennis player Sofia Kenin has pulled out of the forthcoming US Open after she was tested positive for Covid-19. Kenin took to her Twitter account to share the update with her fans on Thursday. It has been a disappointing year for the youngster as she could not deliver her best in the season.
Kenin’s best performance came in Roland Garros when she made it to the fourth round but lost to Greek player Maria Sakkari in straight sets. There were a lot of huge expectations from the 22-year old American after she won the Australian Open 2020 and finished as the runners-up in the French Open.
Thus, she was named as the WTA player of the season in 2020 but she couldn’t repeat the same kind of performances in the ongoing season.
“Hi guys.. I am writing with disappointing news. Recently, I tested positive for Covid-19,” announced Kenin on Twitter. “Fortunately I am vaccinated and thus my symptoms have been fairly mild. However I have continued to test positive and thus will not be able to compete at the US Open next week.
“I plan to spend the next several weeks getting healthy and preparing to play well this fall. Thank you all for supporting me. I want to wish all the players the best of luck in New York.”
The World no.5 will aim to make a solid comeback after recovering from Covid-19. Things haven’t gone according to plan for the youngster and she will look to turn the tables and work on her game in pursuit to be back at her absolute best.
Meanwhile, Kenin, who was born in Moscow, Russia had lost in the Round of 16 against Elise Mertens of Belgium in US Open 2020.
