NBA legend Mark Eaton dies after bicycle crash

Utah Jazz former legendary player Mark Eaton has died after an apparent bicycle crash. He was 64 years old. Eaton played for Utah Jazz during his glorious career and he was named as the Defensive player of the year on two occasions.

Eaton was riding his bike in Summit County, Utah on Friday. It is reported that a passerby saw Eaton lying on the road before 8:30 PM. Officials reveal that there is no reason that the vehicle was involved in an accident. Eaton was taken to hospital, where he was declared dead.

“The Utah Jazz are profoundly saddened at the unexpected passing of Mark Eaton, who was an enduring figure in our franchise history and had a significant impact in the community after his basketball career. Mark played his entire 11-year NBA career with the Jazz and his number was retired as an NBA All-Star and two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year,” the Utah Jazz said in a statement.

“His presence continued around the organization as a friend and ambassador while giving back as a businessman and volunteer to his adopted hometown in Utah. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Teri and their extended family. Mark will be greatly missed by all of us with Jazz.”

Eaton was drafted in the fourth round of the NBA draft in 1982. The 7’4’’ center played 11 seasons for Utah Jazz and established himself as one of the best defenders in the league.

Eaton blocked a total of 3064 shots in his career, which is the fourth highest in NBA history. He led the league in blocks category from 1984-1988. In fact, he still holds the record of most blocks in a particular season when he blocked 456 shots in the 1984-85 edition.

Eaton was named an NBA All-Star in 1989. He was named Defensive Player of the Year in 1985 and 89 seasons. Furthermore, he was named to the All-Defensive First Team on three occasions and twice he was named to the All-Defensive Second Team. Eaton’s No. 53 was retired by the Jazz during the 1995-96 season.
