Former Indian legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar feels we shouldn’t question selections and omissions as it can demoralize some of the players ahead of the T20 World Cup. The Chetan Sharma-led selection panel had picked India’s T20 World Cup squad on Sunday.
A lot of the cricket boffins have questioned the exclusion of Mohammad Shami and Sanju Samson in the T20 World Cup squad. However, Gavaskar believes we should back the players, who have been selected in the main squad.
India has picked a potent 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup while Mohammad Shami, Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Chahar, and Ravi Bishnoi have been named as the stand-by players.
Gavaskar reckons India can go all the way in the T20 World Cup if they have the rub of the green on their side.
“I believe that this team, with a bit of luck that every team needs, can bring home the trophy,” Gavaskar told The Indian Express.
“Once the team is selected, then it’s our India team and we all have to back it. We shouldn’t question selections and omissions as it can demoralize some of the players,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying.
On the other hand, former Indian skipper Dilip Vengsarkar earlier said that he would have selected Mohammad Shami, Umran Malik, and Shubman Gill in the squad.
“I would have picked Mohammed Shami, Umran Malik, and Shubman Gill for the T20 World Cup. Would have given them a long run in T20Is because they all had a brilliant IPL season,” Vengsarkar told the daily.
India was knocked out of the Super 12 stage in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup and they will be looking to come up with a better performance in the upcoming marquee event.
