At just 23 years old, Irfan Yadwad has emerged as one of Indian football’s brightest talents. The Chennaiyin FC forward has not only impressed in the ongoing Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season but has also earned a call-up to the national team camp for the upcoming clash against Malaysia.
Born in Goa, Yadwad’s footballing journey began with Sporting Clube de Goa and Panjim Footballers Club, where he showed his early potential. His standout moment came with Panjim FC, helping them win the Goa Police Cup in 2021, a tournament where he was also named Player of the Tournament.
Recognizing his talent, I-League 2 side Bengaluru United signed Yadwad for the 2022-23 season. It was here that he truly announced himself, scoring 13 goals in 11 appearances and lifting the Stafford Cup in 2023. This stellar performance caught the attention of ISL giants Chennaiyin FC, who brought him on board ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Since joining Chennaiyin FC, Yadwad has become an integral part of the squad under manager Owen Coyle. Though naturally a center forward, he has been deployed on the left wing, adjusting well to the role. Coyle has been vocal in praising Yadwad’s work ethic and adaptability, highlighting his contribution to the team’s attacking play.
In the ISL, Yadwad’s physicality, pace, and versatility have stood out. His best performance came in a 5-1 victory over Jamshedpur FC this season, where he scored a brilliant solo goal and provided two assists. Over 31 appearances for the Marina Machans, he has scored three goals, created 14 chances, and registered 28 shots, showing his growing influence in the league.
Chennaiyin FC’s history of nurturing attacking talent—having developed players like Jeje Lalpekhlua, Lallianzuala Chhangte, and Rahim Ali—provides the ideal platform for Yadwad’s growth. With guidance from Coyle and his experience in the ISL, Yadwad is well-placed to refine his skills further and evolve into a top-tier striker.
His call-up to the national team camp is a testament to his progress and potential. With the Indian team searching for a long-term option at center forward, Yadwad could seize this opportunity to cement his place in the squad.
The future looks bright for Irfan Yadwad, who stands on the cusp of becoming a key player for both club and country. Should he continue his upward trajectory, Indian football fans can expect him to shine on the international stage.
