NorthEast United FC head coach Juan Pedro Benali said he always believed in the club’s players when he joined as the manager. The Highlanders are currently in third place in the Indian Super League standings with three wins, as many draws and two losses and they have a total of 12 points under their belt.
Earlier in the season, NorthEast United FC won the Durand Cup after stunning Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the summit clash to claim their first trophy.
“Before coming to India, I spoke with many coaches and players who had worked here—Sergio, Stuart Baxter, Javi Pinillos, as well as Moroccan and Spanish players like Mourtada Fall, whom I’ve coached before. Their feedback was positive, but the reality has been even better than expected,” Juan Pedro Benali said in an interview with Field Vision.
“When I arrived, I believed in these players. We didn’t change much from last season, but with some added support and confidence, we’re now able to compete with any team,” he commented.
On the other hand, NorthEast United FC striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie has scored 11 goals and has provided four assists in eight matches and the Moroccan forward has been in sublime form.
Speaking about Ajaraie’s form, Benali said, “We hope he doesn’t stop here. He’s doing a fantastic job. Everyone’s working very hard, from the goalkeeper to the bench, the physios, media, and administration. When someone shines, it’s thanks to the whole team. That’s why I give credit to everyone.”
The Spaniard said it is crucial for them to nurture young talent at the grassroots level to help them rise through the ranks.
“Every time, we bring in younger players with great qualities, and they help raise the level of the ISL,” he said.
“What matters is development at youth levels. We need our under-17, under-19 teams playing in major competitions,” Benali added.
NorthEast United FC will next take on Punjab FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi on 23rd November after the international break.
