COVID-19 scare leads to cancellation of Hero Women’s Indian Open golf

The COVID-19 pandemic has continued to wreak havoc in the world, and India is not exempted after it leads to the cancellation of Hero Women’s Indian Open golf tournament.

The decision was made on Tuesday after the tournament, co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour in 2010, was originally scheduled for October. According to the organizers, the tournament billed to take place on the Gary Player Course at DLF Golf, and Country Club in Gurugram will now hold in October next year.

According to the Ladies European Tour (LET) and Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI), the decision had to be made in order to make the health and safety of participants as the top priority.

Having made such a necessary decision, WGAI President Kavita Singh, in reacting to the development, said it was a very difficult decision, but the right one with the prevailing circumstances of COVID-19.

She further stated that with no likelihood of any respite in the foreseeable future, what’s of paramount importance to the body is to safeguard the health and well being of all stakeholders, which include the players, officials, and spectators. She is, therefore, hoping that the tournament returns as planned October next year alongside their sponsors, which include DLF, Castrol, and others.

On her part, Alexandra Armas, Chief Executive LET,  expressed disappointment of missing a year of the Hero Women’s Indian Open.

She is, therefore, looking forward to it returning next year after holding its first edition in 2007.

The main venues for the tournament have been DLF Golf and Country Club, and Gurugram. It couldn’t hold on the course in 2013 and 2014 when the DLF Golf and Country Club was undergoing a re-design.

Another woman tournament forced to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic is the Canadian Women’s Open

The LPGA Tour couldn’t organize the tournament due to travel restrictions and quarantine requirements from the COVID-19 pandemic. It was originally scheduled for September 3-6 at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver.
