The opening day of the French Open saw a big upset as Spain’s Pablo Andujar stunned Austria’s Dominic Thiem in the opening round of the slam. Thiem was up by two sets but lost the momentum in the last three to give away the match. Andujar won 4-6,5-7,6-3,6-4,6-4 to surprise Thiem.
In fact, the Spaniard had recently defeated the former World No.1 Roger Federer in the second round of Geneva Open and it must have added a shot in the arm for him.
On the other hand, Thiem hasn’t been at his best in the recent past. The Austrian has failed to consistently go all the way in the big events and he needs to turn the tables. Thiem was not at his best against Andujar and feels that a lot of improvement is needed in his game.
Thiem added that he hasn’t faced such heartbreaking losses in his career thus far and it is a learning curve for him.
“All my career, the last five, six years it was upwards. I never had losses like that, especially here in Roland Garros. Losing like that is very strange to me. I have to think about what’s wrong at the moment”, Thiem said.
“I mean, it’s amazing to reach such a big goal. But at the same time, something is different after. And, as I said before the tournament, it’s a big learning process and despite the loss which hurts so much, I still hope I can bounce back stronger than before”, explained Thiem.
Thiem is not sure when he will be able to get back to his peak.
“But well, right now, I don’t know when the moment is coming”, concluded the Austrian
Meanwhile, Dominic Thiem had won the 2020 US Open but he has gone astray after that big win. Thiem was also a runner-up at Roland Garros in 2018 and 2019 and thus not many expected that he would be knocked out in the first round.
